Noise Reducing Windows in San Antonio, TX

San Antonio homeowners and residents know how noisy it is to live in a big city. Always being able to hear white double hung windowstreet noise, airplanes, and sirens inside their homes day in and day out. This can get frustrating and interruption to sleep and daily life.

If your home is particularly noisy, there could be several reasons for this. Sound transmits into the home through gaps in siding, poorly insulated walls, chimneys, soffits, attic, and dryer vents.

However, one of the biggest contributors to sound making its way into the home are old, leaky windows. Gaps in the window frame or leaks in the window seals are often a major cause of sound transmission. But that’s not the only way noise can get into your home through a window!

Unwanted sound is able to make its way through old windows because of the quality of the glass. Most older homes do not have double pane windows and often the glass is not coated, which not only allows for sound transmission, but also energy loss.

There are 3 things to consider if you want noise reducing windows:

  1. Frame

You’ll want to find a frame that’s heavy, durable, and will last through the elements and time. Aluminum window frames are the most popular because they are cheaper, but they are the least effective when it comes to keeping sound out of the home. Because they don’t stand up to heat and other elements very well, they can easily warp, bend, and allow for leaks. 

  1. Glass

When looking for glass that will provide a sound barrier, it’s important to go for double paned only. Because double paned windows have a layer of gas in between the glass, this adds an extra layer of protection from the noise. On top of that, make sure the glass is coated with a material that will last. Many window companies use a laminate coating, but there is newer, more effective technology now.

  1. Installation

No matter what kind of window you choose, you MUST make sure it is installed properly. A shoddy install job will not only allow unwanted sound in the home, but also allow for water and heat/cold to get in and out. Make sure you hire a company that you’ve researched well and trust!

Another thing to note here is that not all “sound-proof” or noise reducing windows are also energy efficient. Ask the contractor for details on energy efficiency and sound barrier when looking for replacement windows.
